Because of the shortcomings of lithium in treating conditions with frequent changes in mood, mixed episodes, and mania, Depakote (Divalproex Sodium) is one of the best drugs for treatment. It is as effective as lithium for the treatment of acute stage and at the stages of the treatment of mania, and is also effective for patients with partial symptoms. The drug can be administered in high doses to quickly stabilize the condition of acute mania, and can be used synergistically with lithium, tegretolom and atypical antipsychotic agents.
Five placebo-controlled studies have found that Divalproex Sodium reaches an answer (that is, there is at least 50 per cent reduction in symptoms) to severe “manic episode” (48 – 80 percent of the time).
